Susan Haynes country artist

I know Susan from the old days of Franklin Road Academy....

Susan Haynes is a study in contrasts. Beneath her petite frame lies a steely resolve that willed her to follow a creative path in life when everyone around her often took the safe route. Her sweet voice sings with strength about the fragility of honest emotion. She's a spirited southern belle, cursing and praising with equal ease. And though she's a perfectionist when it comes to her music, she's finally found acceptance with being less than perfect herself-an evolution that's in its full glory on Crooked Little Heart.

"I never said out loud, 'I want to be a singer,'" she surprisingly admits. "I always wanted to, but I was raised in an atmosphere where it wasn't appropriate to claim a lot of space or call attention to yourself. So it took me awhile to be willing to put it out there."

Still, Susan spent her girlhood doing what came naturally, in spite of a more conventional upbringing. "I have a childhood friend who's still mad at me," she laughs, "because I always wanted to be Olivia Newton-John and I made her be Pat Benatar. She brought that up at a high school reunion. I was like, 'You're a brunette, I'm a blond-it's not my fault.' There was constant, ridiculous lip-synching. In the fifth grade I was Snoopy in 'You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.' I sang in high school and college productions. I sang 'Xanadu' on roller skates one year, and 'Fame' wearing legwarmers. I've got videotape-it's all very humiliating," she smiles.

The Atlanta, Georgia native-daughter of a corporate litigator father and a homemaker mother-Susan says singing has always been her "default" mode. "No matter what I'm doing, I'm always making up melodies in my head or singing a song. It's always been there, but I never saw anybody pursue a creative life in my family. I thought music would be a hobby, although it was always at the very core of who I am."

So much so that, as a college freshman in Nashville, she finagled a coveted internship at BNA Records in the A&R department. Upon graduation, got a job as studio manager at Loud Recording Studio, owned by legendary producer James Stroud. "I had instinct enough to say, 'I want to stick around this business just in case,'" remembers Susan who, at the time was still a "secret" singer. "I thought maybe I'd be typing a memo and singing loudly and somebody might discover me," she jokes wryly. "Or maybe somebody would knock on my door one day and say, 'Hey is anybody here looking for a record deal?'"

As studio manager at Loud-a job title which she says is a "fancy term for receptionist, cleaning lady and coffee maker"-Susan saw a string of other singers coming in one by one, recording their albums or singing demos. "I'd think to myself, 'I can sing as well as her,'" she jokes. "Whether or not that was true, I don't know, but I realized, 'Maybe people really can do this for a living.' The more I was around it, the more it seemed feasible."

And then one day, Susan was discovered almost exactly how she had once daydreamed. "I was typing up a lyric for a male R&B artist who happened to be in the studio," she remembers. "It was a song I knew, and I was singing the lyric so I could type it more easily, from memory, and he overheard me singing. He went to James Stroud, his producer, and said, 'Did you know your receptionist can sing?' James came out and said, 'You sing?' And I stammered, 'Um, maybe...I don't know...is that bad?' He said, 'Well when you do something, I want to hear about it.'"

That encouragement spurred Susan to finally start pursuing her goals. That, and an unraveling marriage. "I got married at 24 and divorced at 27," she explains. "Before, I had put it off because I'd been in a real unhealthy marriage that had taken all my energy. I really didn't do anything to further my career. But when that ended, I went, 'I have no excuse now.' I knew I had to honor that part of my spirit if I was going to be happy. And that meant getting to it."

Susan got to it by playing some of her demos for Dann Huff, who was then Stroud's right hand man and an aspiring producer. He offered to produce her, but by the time Susan felt she'd found her artistic voice, Dann had gone from "aspiring" to "most-wanted" producer. He was at the helm of Faith Hill's multi-platinum Faith album, and a host of other big names in country music. Susan suddenly found herself waiting at the back of the line for Dann's busy schedule to open up. She used the time to develop her writing, as a staff writer for EMI Publishing.

"That was a turning point for me," says Susan, "because I'd gone through the divorce and then I finally found my artistic angle. In that experience, I learned how to be more authentic, genuine and honest about who I was. Once I discovered that part of myself, I thought, 'Okay now I'm truly ready to sing something.' Until then, I didn't even convince myself when I sang."

It was during this time that Susan wrote "Crooked Little Heart"-the song that is now the first single and the title cut of her debut album. It's a tortured confession of someone stuck in an unhealthy relationship, and an unflinching admission of personal imperfections. The song's tone is a theme running throughout the album. The musically upbeat "Damn This Tangled Mind" (one of the five songs Susan co-wrote) speaks of being unable to move on from an old love; the raucous opener, "Drinkin' In My Sunday Dress," celebrates a bed-ridden bender with tongue squarely in cheek; and the aching ballad "Being Gone" eloquently describes the ending of a co-dependent relationship.

"I am much more likely to be the person that says, 'I messed up,' than to look at you and say, 'You did me wrong,'" admits Susan. "For a long time, as most people do, I tried to hide my imperfections. You try to hide that part of yourself you don't like very much. I hit a real wall when my marriage failed and I didn't have a job. My life wasn't turning out the way I thought it was supposed to. I had to figure out how to like myself, having 'failed' on several levels. I would argue now that it wasn't truly a failure. It was something I needed to go through. It helped me to embrace what wasn't perfect, and what was flawed and very vulnerable about myself."

Susan brought this newfound self-awareness into the studio when she finally was able to record with Dann. "It was surreal," she recalls of that first day. "I was so nervous I made myself sick. I didn't sleep for three days. I'd gotten so wound up because I'd waited for so long. But then I walked into the vocal booth and did the first song. And I went, 'Good God, I could do this every day of my life, all day long.'

"To hear something all of a sudden in its big fat glory coming at you through the headphones-it takes on an energy and a life all of its own. It's overwhelming. It was a good day," she smiles.

Susan says Crooked Little Heart is an accurate reflection of her personality and her music, as well as the transformation she's undergone in the process. "I've cut the apron strings from what I thought I was supposed to be," she states with pride. "This record truly honors who I really am. And I'm comfortable with that. I'm perfectly happy with being perfectly flawed."

Suzanna Gratia Hupp explains meaning of 2nd Amendment!

On October 16, 1991, Hennard drove his 1987 Ford Ranger pickup truck through the front window of a Luby's Cafeteria at 1705 East Central Texas Expressway in Killeen, yelled "This is what Bell County has done to me!", then opened fire on the restaurant's patrons and staff with a Glock 17 pistol and later a Ruger P89. About 80 people were in the restaurant at the time. He stalked, shot, and killed 23 people and wounded another 20 before committing suicide. During the shooting, he approached Suzanna Gratia Hupp and her parents. Hupp had actually brought a handgun to the Luby's Cafeteria that day, but had left it in her vehicle due to the laws in force at the time, forbidding citizens from carrying firearms. According to her later testimony in favor of Missouri's HB-1720 bill[1] and in general, after she realized that her firearm was not in her purse, but "a hundred feet away in [her] car", her father charged at Hennard in an attempt to subdue him, only to be gunned down; a short time later, her mother was also shot and killed. (Hupp later expressed regret for abiding by the law in question by leaving her firearm in her car, rather than keeping it on her person. One patron, Tommy Vaughn, threw himself through a plate-glass window to allow others to escape. Hennard allowed a mother and her four-year-old child to leave. He reloaded several times and still had ammunition remaining when he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head after being cornered and wounded by police.

Reacting to the massacre, in 1995 the Texas Legislature passed a shall-issue gun law allowing Texas citizens with the required permit to carry concealed weapons. The law had been campaigned for by Suzanna Hupp, who was present at the Luby's massacre and both of whose parents were shot and killed. Hupp testified across the country in support of concealed-handgun laws, and was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1996. The law was signed by then-Governor George W. Bush and became part of a broad movement to allow U.S. citizens to easily obtain permits to carry concealed weapons.

DC needs to do the right thing...

I was outraged with the comments made by Director Kerlikowske from the Office of National Drug Control Policy on Wednesday. In saying that marijuana is "dangerous and has no medicinal benefit," Director Kerlikowske took a Bush-era approach to drug policy that ignores both scientific evidence and common sense.

I wish that the left hand knew what the right hand was doing in DC.

Did you know that marijuana can cure alot of diseases but yet something that grows from the ground has been deemed illegal just so pharma companies and hospitals can keep treating a disease instead of curing it. You should be ashamed of letting people die when all you have to do is, the right thing.

Denying the medical efficacy of marijuana is absurd. There is abundant scientific evidence that marijuana is a safe, effective medicine for some people. In 1999, the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine (IOM) reported, "Nausea, appetite loss, pain, and anxiety are all afflictions of wasting, and all can be mitigated by marijuana." Since then, extensive research has confirmed marijuana's medical benefits. For example, three University of California studies published since February 2007 have found that marijuana relieved neuropathic pain, a type of pain that commonly afflicts patients with multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, and diabetes, for which conventional pain drugs are notoriously inadequate.

You have stated your desire to see policy decisions driven by scientific rigor countless times. On this count, Director Kerlikowske has failed.

Secondly, I find it unfortunate that Director Kerlikowske defined marijuana as a dangerous drug when the evidence suggests that it's far less harmful than alcohol and tobacco. The consumption of alcohol is the direct cause of tens of thousands of deaths in the U.S. each year, but there has never been a marijuana overdose death in history. The dependence and harm associated with tobacco use in America is devastating. By comparison, marijuana is remarkably benign.

For eight years under the Bush administration, Americans watched the federal government ignore science and common sense. I hope that you will take a different approach to your discussion of this issue in the future.

Bar B Cutie gets taught a lesson by a legal ccw owner..

the guy who wrote this letter is a specially trained officer in Nashville and this is the guy you have to go to to get a license to carry a gun.... this is the guy who puts you through the test and shows you how to handle a gun....

I wouldn't go to that BBQ place either now....I wouldn't feel safe at all.....I'd feel like a bird sitting on a fence........

> FRIENDS BELOW IS A LETTER WHICH I SENT TO THE CORPORATE OFFICE AND THE MAIN STORE OF A RESTAURANT THAT MY FAMILY AND I HAVE EAT AT FOR MANY YEARS. I AND THE TFA WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO KEEP US POSTED OF ANY "NEW" OR OLD PLACES THAT HAVE POSTED. IN THIS CASE I ALSO TOOK A PICTURE WITH MY CELL PHONE OF THE SIGN THAT WAS JUST VERY "RECENTLY" POSTED!

> Sir,
>
> I have been a loyal customer of the Bar-B-Cutie restaurants for sixty two years, ever sine Mr. Lee had the Bar-B-Cutie on Murfreesboro Road and all the car hops wore the short skirts and delivered the orders on roller skates. My mom and dad took my brother and myself there almost every Friday or Saturday night.
>
> In the last two weeks alone I have spent over three hundred dollars there for Fathers Day food and Fourth of July food, and in the past it is no telling how much my wife and I have spent at your location for family night or lunch or dinner. We have also visited the Nolensville Road location when we are on that side of town. I enjoyed looking at the old pictures of the Murfreesboro Road location and the pictures did bring back a lot of memories of my family eating there.
>
> On the 4th of July I came in and ordered four Racks of Ribs and a pound of pulled pork and food was again outstanding as it has always been.
>
> I am sorry to say that neither I nor any of my family will be back on the property of the Donelson Pike location. I was very shocked to see the "NO GUNS" posting on all the doors when I came in on the 4th. As a retired Metro Officer I consider the fact that establishments have the right to not allow certain individuals in or on their controlled property, but since I retired I have had three times when I have had the need to be armed because others were acting aggressively toward me.
>
> By posting these signs you are also advertising that you nor anyone else in your place of business have any type of protection at all and you are also telling all the gang bangers, crooks, robbers and rapists that your place of business is now open season because your customers cannot protect ourselves and you are denying legal law abiding customers the right of protection.
>
> As a retired Metro Officer and a state and federal certified expert witness on use of force, firearms, self-defense and police and security policies, I am sure that there are plenty of people who will feel the same way as I do about the individual right of protection.
>
> I would encourage you to reconsider the posting that denies the honest law abiding people the right of self-defense. These people, some like me being retired law enforcement, go to classes that teach them the laws on carrying a gun; they take TBI/FBI background checks and are taught to use common sense. The robber, who will ignore your sign, has no training when they come in a wipe out the staff and customers just to have drug money (remember Paul Read for one).
> I must also tell you that I do respect your right to post your property denying those of us legally carrying a firearm to come into your restaurant to eat and I will fight and die for the right for you to be able to make that decision. So do not get me wrong, I am not one of those gun waving "this is my right" type of people, but I am one of those people that does believe in the right to be able to protect myself and my family in public, at home or anywhere else that crime may be that would endanger our safety. I am one of those who will not patronize a place that bans legal firearms carriers. I am one of those who will share this information with other gun owners so that they will also be aware.

The real truth about Obama

Obama's grandmother to perform Muslim Hajj
'Mama Sarah' will go to Mecca for Islamic pilgrimage required by Quran

JERUSALEM – President Barack Obama's paternal grandmother, Sarah Obama, will reportedly perform the Muslim Hajj pilgrimage this year along with her son Syeed Obama.

A private Kenyan television channel, quoted extensively by the Kenyan and Pakistani media, reported Sarah Obama and her son will also visit Dubai before going to Saudi Arabia for performing Hajj. The pair lives in Kenya.

The News, a newspaper in Dubai, confirmed the report. It quoted United Arab Emirates' property tycoon Sulaiman Al Fahim as stating he will personally sponsor Sarah Obama's trip after meeting the elderly Obama in Kenya last week and learning she had always wanted to perform the Hajj.

"I found out that she had not been to the Hajj and that she very much wants to go. As my own mother is no longer with us, our family has a spare place. So I invited her and she has accepted," The News quoted Fahim as saying.

The Hajj is the largest annual pilgrimage in the world. The fifth pillar of Islam requires every able-bodied Muslim to travel to Mecca at least once in their life in a demonstration of solidarity with fellow Muslims and in an act of individual submission to Allah.

Obama's grandmother, a Muslim known locally as "Mama Sarah," lives in Kogelo, a tiny village near the Ugandan border. She was in Washington, D.C., in January for Obama's swearing-in ceremony.

WND's Jerome Corsi reports in the April issue of Whistleblower that Sarah Obama is also the woman who affirmed her elected grandson was born in Kenya, prompting doubts that Barack Obama is eligible to serve as president of the United States.

And though Obama supporters say Sarah Obama's words were mistranslated, Corsi's Whistleblower investigation revealed eyewitnesses and affadavits from a translator verifying Sarah Obama testified to being present at Barack Obama's birth in Mombasa, Kenya.

Get the new Whistleblower magazine, called "YOUR PAPERS, PLEASE? Why dozens of lawsuits and millions of Americans want Barack Obama to prove he's constitutionally qualified to be president."

Whistleblower, Corsi writes, obtained an affidavit submitted by Rev. Kweli Shuhubia, the official Swahili translator for the Anabaptist Conference held annually in Kenya.

In the affidavit Shuhubia states that he visited Obama's grandmother at her home to conduct a telephone conference interview with Bishop Ron McRae in the United States, in which the bishop asked Sarah Obama if her grandson was born in Kenya.

"Ms. Sarah Hussein Obama was very adamant that her grandson, Senator Barack Hussein Obama, was born in Kenya, and that she was present and witnessed his birth in Kenya, not the United States," Shuhubia states in the affidavit. "During the conversation, Ms. Sarah Hussein Obama never changed her reply that she was indeed present when Senator Barack Obama was born in Kenya."

Obama was 'quite religious in Islam'

Obama's faith was a central part of his presidential campaign. He has repeatedly has denied he is a Muslim. His presidential campaign website contained the statement, "Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised as a Muslim, and is a committed Christian."

But as WND has reported, public records in Indonesia listed Obama as a Muslim during his early years, and a number of childhood friends claimed to the media Obama was once a mosque-attending Muslim.

Obama's campaign several times had wavered in response to reporters queries regarding the senator's childhood faith.

Commenting on a Los Angeles Times report quoting a childhood friend stating Obama prayed in a mosque, Obama's campaign released a statement explaining the senator "has never been a practicing Muslim."

Widely distributed reports have noted that in January 1968 Obama was registered as a Muslim at Jakarta's Roman Catholic Franciscus Assisi Primary School under the name Barry Soetoro. He was listed as an Indonesian citizen whose stepfather, listed on school documents as "L Soetoro Ma," worked for the topography department of the Indonesian Army.

Catholic schools in Indonesia routinely accept non-Catholic students but exempt them from studying religion.

After attending the Assisi Primary School, Obama was enrolled "also as a Muslim, according to documents" in the Besuki Primary School, a public school in Jakarta.

Laotze blog, run by an American expatriate in Southeast Asia who visited the Besuki school, noted, "All Indonesian students are required to study religion at school, and a young 'Barry Soetoro,' being a Muslim, would have been required to study Islam daily in school. He would have been taught to read and write Arabic, to recite his prayers properly, to read and recite from the Quran and to study the laws of Islam."

Indeed, in Obama's autobiography, "Dreams From My Father," he acknowledged studying the Quran and describes the public school as "a Muslim school."

"In the Muslim school, the teacher wrote to tell mother I made faces during Quranic studies," wrote Obama.

The Indonesian media have been flooded with accounts of Obama's childhood Islamic studies, some describing him as a religious Muslim.

Speaking to the country's Kaltim Post, Tine Hahiyary, who was principal of Obama's school while he was enrolled there, said she recalls he studied the Quran in Arabic.

"At that time, I was not Barry's teacher, but he is still in my memory," claimed Tine, who is 80 years old.

The Kaltim Post said Obama's teacher, named Hendri, had died.

"I remember that he studied mengaji (recitation of the Quran)," Tine said, according to an English translation by Loatze.

Mengaji, or the act of reading the Quran with its correct Arabic punctuation, is usually taught to more religious pupils and is not known as a secular study.

Also, Loatze documented the Indonesian daily Banjarmasin Post interviewed Rony Amir, an Obama classmate and Muslim, who described Obama as "previously quite religious in Islam."

"We previously often asked him to the prayer room close to the house," Amir said. "If he was wearing a sarong (waist fabric worn for religious or casual occasions) he looked funny."

The Los Angeles Times, which sent a reporter to Jakarta, quoted Zulfin Adi, who identified himself as among Obama's closest childhood friends, stating the presidential candidate prayed in a mosque, something Obama's campaign claimed he never did.

"We prayed, but not really seriously, just following actions done by older people in the mosque," said Adi. "But as kids, we loved to meet our friends and went to the mosque together and played."

Friday prayers

Obama's official campaign site contained a page titled "Obama has never been a Muslim, and is a committed Christian." The page stated, "Obama never prayed in a mosque. He has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ."

But the campaign changed its tune when it issued a "practicing Muslim" clarification to the Los Angeles Times.

An article in March by the Chicago Tribune apparently disputed Adi's statements to the L.A. paper. The Tribune caught up with Obama's declared childhood friend, who now describes himself as only knowing Obama for a few months in 1970 when his family moved to the neighborhood. Adi said he was unsure about his recollections of Obama.

But the Tribune found Obama did attend mosque.

"Interviews with dozens of former classmates, teachers, neighbors and friends show that Obama was not a regular practicing Muslim when he was in Indonesia," states the Tribune article.

It quotes Obama's former neighbors and third-grade teacher recalling how the young Obama "occasionally followed his stepfather to the mosque for Friday prayers."

Daniel Pipes, director of the Middle East Forum, notes the Tribune article "cited by liberal blogs as refuting claims Obama is Muslim" actually implies Obama was an irregularly practicing Muslim and twice confirms Obama attended mosque services.

In an interview with the New York Times, Obama described the Muslim call to prayer as "one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset."

The Times' Nicholos Kristof wrote Obama recited, "with a first-class [Arabic] accent," the opening lines of the Muslim call to prayer.

The first few lines of the call to prayer state:

Allah is Supreme!
Allah is Supreme!
Allah is Supreme! Allah is Supreme!
I witness that there is no god but Allah
I witness that there is no god but Allah
I witness that Muhammad is his prophet ...

Some attention also has been paid to Obama's paternal side of the family, including his father and his brother, Roy.

Writing in a chapter of his book describing his 1992 wedding, Obama stated: "The person who made me proudest of all was Roy. Actually, now we call him Abongo, his Luo name, for two years ago he decided to reassert his African heritage. He converted to Islam and has sworn off pork and tobacco and alcohol."

Still, Obama maintains he was raised by his Christian mother and repeatedly has labeled as "smears" several reports attempting to paint him as a Muslim.

"Let's make clear what the facts are: I am a Christian. I have been sworn in with a Bible. I pledge allegiance [to the American flag] and lead the Pledge of Allegiance sometimes in the United States Senate when I'm presiding," he told the Times of London earlier this year.
